Sigma Alpha History

Two women who attended The Ohio State University were interested in the social Greek system felt that they wanted more than the system offered. They wanted an organization that would provide them with the opportunity to enhance their careers in agriculture and also establish lifelong friendships with women pursuing similar careers.

The first meeting of Sigma Alpha was on November 16, 1977. Sigma Alpha became an officially recognized student organization on January 26, 1978. The five founding members are Ann Huling Mathews, Cindie Davis, Marilyn Burns, Jennifer McMillan, and Amy Mathews. Today, Sigma Alpha includes nearly 100 chapters across the country including 69 collegiate chapters.
